Error: MMSYSTEM266 The device could not be...(due to damaged or missing files).
Error:
MMSYSTEM266 The device could not be loaded. Verify the driver is installed correctly.
Cause:
The error can occur if any one of the following files is damaged or missing from the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder: MSVIDEO.DLL, MCIAVI.DRV, DCIMAN.DLL.
Solution:
Replace the damaged or missing files in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder with the files extracted from the Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskette number 8.
Do one of the following:
1) Extract the files from the Windows 95 CD-ROM:
a) Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
b) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
c) Select 'Programs' and select 'MS-DOS Prompt'. (The 'MS-DOS Prompt' window appears.)
d) Type the following at the MS-DOS prompt and press ENTER:
CD\
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95\WIN95_08.CAB MSVIDEO.DLL /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95\WIN95_08.CAB MCIAVI.DRV /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95\WIN95_08.CAB DCIMAN.DLL /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
(where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive).
NOTE 1: When prompted to overwrite the existing file of the same name in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, type Y for yes.
NOTE 2: If the above command does not work, the location may be incorrect. Please contact a qualified computer or next-level support.
e) To exit from the MS-DOS mode, type the following at the DOS prompt and press ENTER:
EXIT
2) Extract the files from the Windows 95 diskette number 8:
a) Insert the Windows 95 diskette number 8 into the floppy disk drive.
b) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
c) Select 'Programs' and select 'MS-DOS Prompt'. (The 'MS-DOS Prompt' window appears.)
d) At the MS-DOS Prompt, type the following commands and press ENTER:
CD\
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95_08.CAB MSVIDEO.DLL /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95_08.CAB MCIAVI.DRV /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
EXTRACT <drive>:\WIN95_08.CAB DCIMAN.DLL /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
(where <drive> is the letter of the floppy disk drive).
NOTE 1: When prompted to overwrite the existing file of the same name in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, type Y for yes.
NOTE 2: If the above command does not work, the location may be incorrect. Please contact a qualified computer or next-level support.
e) To exit from the MS-DOS mode, type the following at the DOS prompt and press ENTER:
